![]() ![]() Your pics show a Holley mechanical secondary double pumper carb which definitely wouldn't have been original in 1961,casting numbers on a trans case that is consistent with a T-10 4 spd.,but a clue that indicates that this 61 was not delivered to the dealer with the 4 spd. I pulled that info from one of my old books (not a Ford publication) so it could be suspect. If anyone has a 1961 Ford with an M or Q engine code, would certainly like to see supporting documentation.īut I still remember seeing something about a Q code in 1961. One of the factory race cars was instructed to order as a three speed and a change over kit would be furnished. Early 1962 model year availability of a four speed was iffy. He said they waited until late in the year to place the order hoping that Ford would make the 4 speed available. His original car was a fairly late car with a July 1961 delivery. The reason I ask is my father thinks his original 390-401 Starliner that he purchased new was a Q code. I know popular belief is that they all were Z codes, the same as the 390-300. Has anyone ever heard of or seen a 1961 Hipo 390 car with a Q engine designation in the VIN.
